1840's: German Brewers give franchises to taverns to sell their ale

1851: Singer Sewing Machine in the US grants franchises to stores as a way to expand sales

Early 1900's: Gas stations and auto dealerships expand rapidly through franchising

1924: Allen & White start A&W Root Beer Drive-Ins

Post World War II: Rapid expansion of franchises in response to growth of suburbs and travel

1950's: Congress passes laws regulating gas and automobile franchises

1955: Ray Kroc opens first McDonald's

1970: Minnie Pearl Fried Chicken franchise scandal leads to first franchise disclosure laws in California

1978-79: U.S. Federal Trade Commission adopts Uniform Franchise Offering Circular (UFOC) requiring certain disclosures to prospective franchisees
